Chinese New Year Lucky Food Homemade Sticky Rice Ball in 10 Minutes (自制糯米汤圆)

Print Friendly and PDF 自制糯米汤圆 (Zi Zhi Nuo Mi Tang Yuan)

Handmade sticky rice ball is much easier than you think. This recipe makes 6 plain sticky rice balls for one person's serving within 10 minutes. A great winter breakfast choice, or night time snack.

Store sold rice balls usually have a lot of sugar, those with fillings have a lot of oil as well. This homemade version is sugar free (the soup has a little bit sugar for taste).

Ingredients
  • 40 grams sticky rice flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar

Total Time: 10 minutes
Yields: 6 rice balls

Cooking Steps
1. Add 1 cup of water to a small cooking pot. Add 1/2 tablespoon sugar to the pot for flavor, boil. This takes about 4 minutes with cold water.
2. While waiting for the water to boil. Measure 30 grams water and 40 grams sticky rice flour to a bowl, mix with chopsticks evenly.
3. Once the water boils, use hand to make 6 rice balls. Divide the dough into 6 portions. Place a small dough of 1 inch size onto the center of one hand, then use two hands to press and roll into one round ball shape.
4. Add the 6 rice balls to the boiling water, boil for 4-5 minutes. The rice balls should all be floating.
5. When serving, place 6 rice balls into a bowl, add stock into the bowl.

For some reason, I never get used to western style breakfast such as donut, bagel, toast bread or cold milk. I still enjoy numerous traditional Chinese breakfast that can be easily made at home. Maybe because I was born with a Chinese stomach?
